Arts, Culture and Recreation

Rainy days are just creative fuel
Yes, it rains here. A lot. You know what a coastal town full of creative people does with all that weather? Makes stuff. Plays stuff. Paints, performs, sings, sculpts, and sells it at the craft fair. Rupert has more culture packed into its square kilometres than towns three times our size, and we’re unapologetically smug about it.

Live shows, big laughs, small rooms

The Tom Rooney Playhouse pulls in nationally-known comedy acts, runs regular improv nights, and hosts an annual festival of local plays and workshops. It’s the kind of venue where you can catch a touring headliner one weekend and your neighbour’s one-act the next (and where the neighbour’s one-act is, occasionally, the better show).

Big venue, small town

Over at the Lester Centre for the Performing Arts, you’ll find concerts, theatre, dance, and the occasional “wait, they’re playing HERE?” moment when a name you know rolls through town. Live performance in Rupert hits different when the venue is small enough that you can actually see the drummer’s face – and whether he has something in his teeth.

Makers, markets, and the Christmas craft fair of legend

Every Christmas, Rupert hosts the largest craft fair in northwestern B.C. It’s a full-on event. Throughout the rest of the year, local artisans run workshops where you can learn everything from weaving to ceramics to whatever new thing someone just got obsessed with. Fair warning: if you’ve been meaning to pick up a creative hobby, this is a dangerously good place to do it. Your spare room is about to become a studio.

We also like to move

For a town our size, the league options are kind of ridiculous. Baseball, softball, hockey, squash, soccer, rugby, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, dance, swimming, golf, and pickleball all have active teams, leagues and ladders running across most age brackets. Whether you’re five or sixty-five, there’s a roster with space on it. Need pampering after a class in spin, yoga, palates, cardio boxing, or strength training? You can choose from several massage and bodywork practitioners, nail studios, gyms and even a wellness collective that offers dry cedar or infrared saunas.  The City’s Active Living Guide is the first step to scan what’s on offer, but the fastest route in is just reaching out to a league or team directly. Rupert is a say-hi-and-you’re-in kind of place. We don’t do gatekeeping. We have neither the time nor the population for it.
