Not going to lie, there is high demand and limited space, so get on it early. Start with the Berry Patch Child Care Resource and Referral Centre (250-622-2434). They have a list of available daycare services. It’s the fastest way to get oriented when you’re new and overwhelmed (a state of being all parents are intimately familiar with, regardless of postal code). The good news is that new daycares are opening to stem the demand.
For parents that want to have a wee break, enter the Growing Space (250-624-9777) in the Ocean Centre Mall. Your child can play in an indoor play space with other children, and you can meet other parents over coffee. Also available for birthday rentals.
Cradles to Moccasins is the family drop-in centre (250-627-7166) that quietly makes life better for a lot of new parents in Rupert. They run a weekday play space for the little ones (0-6 years of age), pour free coffee for the grown-ups (a detail that should not be undersold), and can connect you with free clothing and a loaner car seat for your child while you get settled. No appointment needed. Just walk in. It’s the kind of place where you arrive frazzled and leave feeling like you might actually be okay.
Rupert has a real web of parenting supports run by organizations who actually know what they’re doing. The Friendship Centre, North Coast Community Services Society, Berry Patch, and others all run programs you can lean on, whether you need help with the practical stuff, want to meet other parents, or just need to know there’s someone in your corner.
None of this is the kind of help you have to earn or qualify for in some complicated way. It’s just there, because the people running these programs know that raising kids is hard and a little bit of community goes a very long way. Also: nobody here is going to judge you for showing up in yesterday’s yoga pants with something mysterious on your shoulder. It’s not — sorry, IT’S SNOT — a big deal. We’ve all been there.
